My charity ebook, On the Wings of Pink Angels

As part of Read an E-Book Week, I’ll be featuring ebooks here on this blog. Three of them will be my own ebooks, but I’ll be sure to include a couple of others. The books featured here are only available as ebooks and not in print format as well. It’s my way of staying true to promoting actual ebooks during Read an E-Book Week!

The third ebook I’d like to promote for Read an E-Book Week is my charity ebook, On the Wings of Pink Angels. Royalties I receive from purchase of this ebook will be donated to charity.

Synopsis:
"You have cancer." These are words people dread hearing. But when worse comes to worst, push comes to shove, something wonderful happens. More people come together for support and encouragement. More people participate in "Race for the Cure" events, and more people discover an inner strength within themselves that they never knew they had before. On the Wings of Pink Angels offers a gentle hand through this difficult time, sharing stories that inspire hope, strength, gratitude and courage during a time when someone must fight for his or her life against breast cancer.

Excerpt:

Breast Cancer: “It’s Not Just a Chick Thing”

A lot can be said about women and breast cancer. And, when you hear about someone being diagnosed with breast cancer, that someone is usually a woman.

Maine mother, writer and author Jenn Greenleaf knows a woman, her mother, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. But she also happens to know a man who was diagnosed with breast cancer, as well. That man was her father.

During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 2011, Jenn commented on her Facebook page that both of her parents are breast cancer survivors, adding, “It’s not just a chick thing.”

“I found out about my father’s diagnosis when I was nineteen or twenty, and I was devastated because he didn’t tell me the news until after he had gone through his mastectomy,” she said. “My father and I have a precarious relationship, at best, so it was difficult receiving this news. He and I had been trying to rebuild our relationship that year [which Jenn recalls as either 1994 or ‘95], so he came clean about what he went through because he knew it might have an affect on my future health.”

Up until then, Jenn knew very little about breast cancer. “To be honest, I didn’t know anything up close and personal about breast cancer. Sure, my primary care physicians taught me how to do self-examinations and I heard of celebrities who had either fought or lost their battle. I was impressed by how Montel Williams won his battle, particularly since he’s male and, back then, it seemed unheard of for a male to receive a breast cancer diagnosis.”

Indeed, it was so unheard of, that Jenn’s father expressed frustration over how very little men are considered when it comes to breast cancer.

“He felt strange about it, and blamed his lifestyle and life circumstances. He didn’t believe it had anything to do with genetics, but he couldn’t be sure because he and his five brothers grew up in the foster care system. He knew his family, but their personal and medical histories remain a mystery.”

As for Jenn’s mother, her diagnosis came later, in 2008.

“I was terrified when my mother told me she found a lump in 2008. I felt it, and asked her to get it checked out. She said, ‘I better, because everyone who’s felt it so far has said the same thing.’ She received her diagnosis, and began radiation. She was able to have a lumpectomy without having to lose too much. She’s still in recovery, and still has issues with pain and other lumps coming and going. So, the stress of her health still weighs heavily on my mind. She had ovarian cancer in 1986 and survived that with a hysterectomy, so when she received her second cancer diagnosis, I was certain we’d lose her.”

Thankfully, both of her parents are breast cancer survivors. What stands out about this experience is Jenn’s father being diagnosed with something that is majorly seen as a “woman’s disease.”

“I think it’s ridiculous, to be honest. I don’t like how everything is pink because it’s a breast issue—not a woman’s issue.”

She added, “I think the pink ribbons should be turned into a ribbon that blends blue into it somehow.”
(The rest of this interview appears in the ebook.)

My new ebook, On the Wings of Pink Angels

Gypsy Shadow Publishing recently released my new ebook, On the Wings of Pink Angels: Triumph, Struggle and Courage Against Breast Cancer. I am very excited about this ebook because it’s about a topic that is very important to me (breast cancer) and it’s also for charity. All royalties I receive from sales of this ebook will be donated to Courageous Kids.

Thank you to Help A Reporter Out, the ladies at Gypsy Shadow Publishing (Denise Bartlett and Charlotte Holley) and to everyone who took the time to share their stories and answer my interview questions for the material in this ebook.

This ebook is a semi-anthology. Some people who have survived breast cancer or know someone who had breast cancer took the time to write their stories and share them for this ebook. I have also interviewed people affected by breast cancer in some way. Additionally, I wrote “organization spotlights” on charities and organizations who assist anyone diagnosed with breast cancer. There are a couple of breast cancer book reviews, as well as information about businesses that “go pink” every October. Finally, there is also a short story with a character in it who is diagnosed with breast cancer.

This ebook started out as a blog series I ran in 2009 on my blog, Palms to Pines, for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I am so pleased to see the series turned into an ebook. Not everything from that blog series ended up here (and you can read one such item I kept out here) but the final result is something I’m very happy with. As to the title, while I was working on the manuscript, I noticed that a recurrent image which kept appearing in the stories and projects were angels. This stuck with me and I knew I had to use an angel, or angels, in the title somehow. But they could not just be any angel – they had to be pink angels. Pink, in honor of the pink ribbon symbolizing breast cancer. I also took note of how so many people offered support and encouragement to those suffering from breast cancer, as though they “carried them” along on their journey. Thus, I came up with the title “On the Wings of Pink Angels.”

I hope anyone who reads this book will enjoy it. There is so much in here that inspired me and touched my heart. It’s amazing how something as dreadful as breast cancer can cause so many people to come together and so something good in the face of something bad. I could reread all of these stories and walk away from it feeling just a bit more hopeful for the future of our world, and for the hope that one day we will finally have a cure.

Forthcoming ebook written in honor of NBCAM

It’s October! And aside from Halloween, October means something else: It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! To support the occasion, my breast cancer anthology (well, it’s half anthology and half stuff that I wrote), will be published as an ebook by Gypsy Shadow Publishing! The ebook is called On the Wings of Pink Angels: Triumph, Struggle and Courage Against Breast Cancer. It contains stories from breast cancer survivors, interviews with people whose family have been affected by breast cancer, interviews with business professionals supporting the cause and information about breast cancer.

I am very excited about the upcoming release of this ebook. It started out as a labor of love; I ran a breast cancer series on my Palms to Pines blog in 2009 and, ever since, wanted to turn it into an ebook that would benefit a charity. Now, three years later, that will happen. When I found out that Gypsy Shadow Publishing, my publisher of The Yellow Rose and two other books, was going to start up an imprint of books for charity, I asked if it was possible I could turn my blog series into a manuscript and submit it to them. They said yes and I got busy putting it all together. Thank you to Denise Bartlett and Charlotte Holley for supporting and publishing this project! All royalties I receive from sales of this ebook will go to Courageous Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps kids cope with the loss of a loved one (mother, father, grandparent, etc.).

It seems like every October, I’m all about National Breast Cancer Awareness Month or Halloween. This year, it’s NBCAM. Next year, it’ll be Halloween, as I hope to have my horror novel out by then.

Maybe one of these years, it’ll be about both!

Supporting Migraine Awareness Month: Guest post by Oleg Medvedkov

Funding Research for Migraine Cures through Laughter!

Charity Drive for the Migraine Research Foundation.

On the last week of Migraine Awareness Month, I am running a fundraising event for the Migraine Research Foundation.

Dates of the event: Wednesday, June 27th to Sunday, July 1st, 2012.

The Migraine Research Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding migraine research in the United States. To quote Stephen Semlitz, co-founder and Chairman of the Board - "The Migraine Research Foundation hopes that everyone who suffers from migraine will eventually have an effective treatment that they can count on to allow them to live a healthy, happy and productive life." In other words - a Very Worthy Cause.

During the days of a Charity Drive, I will donate ALL the royalties from the sales of my books from "Take a Break & Have a Laugh" series of books to MRF. Once again - when you buy any "Take a Break & Have a Laugh" book between June 27th and July 1st of 2012 inclusively, all the profit I get from Amazon as a writer goes to Migraine Research Foundation.

"Take a Break & Have a Laugh" are collections of short humorous stories written by yours truly. And when I say short - I mean bite-sized. For example - you can read one story in the volume while waiting in line in a store or while having a cup of coffee. BTW, please go easy on coffee if you have migraines, OK? :)

Why funny stories and why do I write them? That's easy - because I have migraines and the rest of the baggage that comes with it. If you are a migraineur, you know what I am talking about. Written as a "Laughter Therapy", these volumes contain stories that are designed to make the reader feel better, more positive and energetic. Laughter is not exactly a cure but it sure makes life easier, especially for people like us.

Just to make sure MRF receives a donation no matter how MUCH of a great success this Charity Drive will be, I am starting the ball rolling by pledging to Migraine Research Foundation $50 upfront.

What can YOU do to help this Charity Drive?
Link

1. Click here to see "Take a Break & Have a Laugh" books on Amazon. All the loyalties from each sale will go directly to Migraine Research Foundation.

2. If you prefer, you can donate to Migraine Research Foundation separately on their website.

3. Please help to spread the word - Tweets, Facebook Shares and Blog Posts will be greatly appreciated. MFR - @MigraineRF and facebook.com/migraineresearch, Oleg Medvedkov - @olegmedvedkov and facebook.com/OlegMedvedkov

If you are on Facebook, please join us at the FB event.

Through the duration of the event, the updates and Q&A will be posted on olegmedvedkov.wordpress.com

Any thoughts, comments or opinions - please let us know.

We are combining Laughter therapy with research for migraine cures, people! Let's make this Charity Drive a success!
