Writing Can Be Good Therapy

Sometimes, there are things you need to get off your chest. Or maybe you want to write a “revenge story,” in which someone you are really angry with gets the comeuppance they didn’t get in real life.

You know what? If you really want to vent or write such a story, go for it. (Just be careful with what you do about the revenge story!)

Writing about your feelings or creating fictional circumstances of things you want to happen can really be good therapy. It can help you get all those feelings out in a productive and healthy way. And the best part is that after you write those things, especially in a journal, you will likely feel a lot better. (If that doesn’t help, then try talking with a family member or a close friend.)

Whether you are experiencing grief, anger or pain, writing about your feelings or working through them with your writing can help you come to terms with them. You don't have to keep what you write, either. You also don't have to show it to anyone. This kind of writing is just for you, to help you with whatever you are struggling with, and it can serve as a useful tool to guide you through this time.

And, if you wish for something to happen that you know won’t ever happen, then you can write about it happening in a story. It’s the next best thing to reality.

So the next time you are struggling with feelings or emotions you are having a hard time sharing or expressing, write about it instead. Write everything down. Put it all onto paper so that you can work with what you are going through and figure out a way to cope with your feelings and emotions.
